In many parts of Europe and Scandinavia, the start of 2010 has seen weather conditions that have been a bit more difficult than the normal winter conditions we are accustomed to preparing for. Major traffic problems with roads blocked off because of abandoned vehicles create problems for travellers and result in delayed deliveries for companies.

Traffic jams, delays and accidents often cause unnecessary distress for the individuals involved. They also cost companies and society in general large sums of money every year. These traffic problems are often caused by poorly equipped vehicles. Tyres are one of the problems. This has resulted in the Swedish Transport Agency coming up with a new law on tread depth. Even if tyre tread meets the legal requirements, it’s often not good enough. What is needed in many cases is better friction between tyre and road surface so as to ensure that the driver can maintain control of the vehicle. Studded tyres are one alternative that increases friction, but they cause heavy wear to the road surface and are a constant source of environmental pollution. This is not ideal for economy of operation or the environment, as the need for friction varies.

It’s time for vehicle owners to take a look at the options that have been developed to reduce these risks. There can surely be no doubt that you should equip vehicles with preventive measures to reduce these costs.

One product that has been around for many years, but that too few people use, is the Onspot automatic friction control system. When the road becomes icy and slippery, the driver activates Onspot at a press of the button from inside the cab. On activation, two arms each lower a wheel with chains that start to rotate when they meet the side of the tyre. The links of the chains are drawn underneath the tyre, which increases the friction. Onspot works just as well when braking. If the vehicle is fitted with ABS, the Onspot wheel continues feeding in the links until the vehicle has stopped. Activation is possible at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

As this safety device is easier to use and is easily accessible, it is only used when needed. It doesn’t look particularly special. And it doesn’t cost that much either. But risks are reduced, the driver feels safer and his working environment is enhanced.

Onspot may be compared to an insurance policy - it’s there when you need it. It should be mentioned that the emergency services often equip their vehicles with Onspot. They cannot risk not reaching the location of an emergency incident. They have to equip their vehicles with preventive measures.

One new feature is that Onspot is now also available for light vehicles such as the MB Sprinter, VW Crafter, Iveco Daily and Renault Mascot. The result of this is that a number of ambulances have been equipped with Onspot.
